Hi there, my name is Malina! I'm a Chinese-American artist from Honolulu, Hawai’i, who is now based in Portland, Oregon. I create vibrant, colorful sculptures using both soft and solid materials, primarily ceramics, textiles, and fibers. My goal with creating sculptures is to create objects that invoke emotion and prompt people to question the motives behind my art and their reactions to it. I hope to create artwork that sparks conversation and encourages community building that uplifts joy and unity through shared experiences. Some of the subjects I enjoy addressing are food, artifacts of comfort, and labor; all of which are often major pillars of culture and community, be that within chosen or prescribed spaces. I'm using art to explore what connects people, and how that can invoke positive emotions and experiences for those around me. My main modes of creation for these sculptures are carving, slab building, and coiling clay to create ceramic pieces, and sewing, stuffing, or weaving textiles to create soft objects.
