I’m a Chinese-American artist from Honolulu, Hawai’i, who grew up surrounded by the unique local and traditional culture of the Hawaiian islands and the art that was created from it. In my artistic practice, I create vibrant, colorful sculptures out of both soft and solid materials, particularly ceramic and textiles. My goal with creating sculptures is to create things that invoke emotion and press people to question the motives behind my art and their reaction. Emotions that I try to invoke through my work are joy, curiosity, and wonder. I think that these emotions are the keys to communicating with others and creating a community that uplifts joy and unity through shared experiences. Some of the subjects I address often are food, artifacts of comfort, and utility items. We live in a world where these subjects are often major pillars of culture and community, be that within chosen or perscribed spaces. I am using art to explore what connects people and what may create new bonds that can invoke positive emotions and experiences for those around me. My main modes of creation for these sculptures are carving, slab building, and coiling clay to create various ceramic pieces, and sewing, stuffing, or weaving textiles to create soft objects. I also enjoy exploring materiality and the importance of context within artwork in my practice.
